Pursuing food self-sufficiency with fertilizer investment

Nigeria’s population is growing steadily at a yearly average of 2.6 per cent. To feed future generations and drive the nation’s $30 billion export revenue, there is a need for gains in output that are possible with plenty supply of plant nutrients to sustain crop yields. Recent investments in fertilizer plants in some states are expected to change the narrative on food self sufficiency. FEMI ADEKOYA writes.
Having subsidised food importation for many years using earnings from oil, there have been calls to develop and implement a sustainability plan that will ensure that the opportunities in the agriculture sector are not only properly harnessed but maximised to drive non-oil revenue.
While the effect of mechanization may have limited the number of hands required in farms, the opportunities inherent in agricultural enterprises and allied industries in developing countries remain enormous.
In Nigeria, agriculture is the largest employer of labour, especially in rural communities, according to the World Bank, considering the amount of labour generated through various out-grower schemes.
It is in line with this thinking that many investors like Aliko Dangote and even the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, in pursuit of the promise to create 200,000 jobs in the state, are consolidating their job creation drive with various fertilizer plants.
For the Edo State Governor, the revamping of the Edo Fertilizer Plant and Chemical Company Limited, in Auchi was envisioned as a tool for unlocking the agricultural potential in the State by providing the people with low-cost inputs to grow sustainable agribusinesses, attain food sufficiency, diversify the local economy and increase the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, in the company of Ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh and Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, inaugurated the 60, 000 metric tonnes of fertilizer a year plant, at Auchi.
Indeed, the plant was revived under a public, private partnership arrangement, between the Edo State Government and WACOT Limited, a market leader in agricultural input processing and distribution, and the Federal Government.
The project is part of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, designed to disrupt the importation of blended NPK fertilizer into Nigeria, by directly negotiating discounted contracts for procuring core raw materials, blending same locally and selling NPK fertilizer to farmers at a significantly lower price. For the Edo Fertilizer Plant, NPK fertilizer would be sold for half the market price.
In his speech, Osibanjo said: “The President Muhammadu Buhari administration is committed to making it easy for investors to do business in the country. We want to achieve this through the promotion of transparency and efficiency. We want every state to be involved in this drive and create the enabling environment for business to thrive in their domain.”
He commended the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, for creating the enabling business environment for the revitalization of the fertilizer plant, adding that the revived facility was proof that the Edo State government was in sync with the Federal Government’s initiative to diversify the economy away from oil to the agricultural sector.
He stressed that fertilizer blending plants were being revitalized across the country as a result of the presidential initiative to diversify the economy from crude oil, boost farming activities as well as develop the agriculture value chain.
In his inauguration speech last month, Obaseki said that the project had died pre-maturely because the PDP administration squandered the opportunity for pecuniary gains, noting, “The facility was never operated for a day after it was fraudulently launched by the opposition party about 14 years ago.
What the opposition could not do for nearly a decade, this government, with the support of the Edo people, has done, in only about nine months.”
Obaseki said the revitalization was an effort to make the state self-sufficient in food production, noting that the ceremony was a milestone, as the facility was moribund for a long time, depriving the people of the benefits of having a fertilizer blending facility in the state.
According to him, “The aim of revitalizing this plant is to make the state self-sufficient in food production and enable farmers to get fertilizer at affordable prices. We in Edo State are determined to make food available in the country.”
The plant will serve not just farmers in Edo state, but also those in neighbouring states, making it a hub for the supply of agricultural inputs.
He said the facility would go a long way in providing fertilizer for farmers in neighbouring states such as Kogi, Delta, Ondo, and Anambra, as it is the only blending plant in the region.
Obaseki commended the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative as well as the management of WACOT Limited for partnering with the state government in revamping the plant.
“This achievement is an open call to other investors to bring in new technology, create more jobs and expand our economic opportunities,” he added.
The governor called on the Otaru of Auchi, the community where the plant is located, to ensure the protection of the facility against vandalism as it would provide several economic opportunities for the community and state.
Strengthening diversification drive
The Edo Fertilizer plant is a bold step in the campaign to diversify the state’s earnings, and provide essential inputs for farmers in the state, many of whom have had to go through the drudgery of farming with little or no stimulus for improved yield or income. It is expected that inputs sourced from the facility would serve as a stimulus to revitalizing the business of smallholders and medium scale farmers in the state.
A key highpoint of the revamping project is that it somewhat justifies the argument for Public Private Partnerships (PPP), as the private partners in the project, WACOT Limited has shown that much can be achieved if dedicated public servants mount the saddle of state. Instructively, the turn-around of the facility happened in just nine months after a 14-year hiatus.
Acknowledging this, the Group Managing Director of WACOT, Rahul Savara, commended Osinbajo for commissioning the plant and Obaseki for fostering the partnership between the state and his company.
He said the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative has made local production feasible and sustainable in the country, adding that the company’s employees would be made up of 95 per cent indigenous workers.

Afrimat boosts IT security through J2 partner agreement

Afrimat, a leading open pit mining company providing industrial minerals and construction materials, has enhanced its security profile through a comprehensive new IT security partnership with value-added ICT firm J2 Software.
With a limited IT team in-house, Afrimat has partnered with J2 managed security services to improve its security posture across five key risk areas: emails, endpoints, internet access, mobile device management and human behaviour tracking.
Johan du Plessis, General Manager Technology Systems at Afrimat, said in the current environment, in which cyber-crime is proliferating, Afrimat sought significantly enhanced security without having to grow its in-house resources or immediately implement a wave of new solutions.
“By partnering with J2, we gained a team of cyber security experts on our side, who carried out a thorough risk assessment, developed a cyber security roadmap that addressed our business’s needs, and implemented appropriate solutions.”
J2 deployed Mimecast, Zscaler, Webrooot endpoint solution and Dtex SystemSkan to address Afrimat’s current security priorities.
Only months after the first solutions were implemented, Afrimat is already seeing business benefits, says du Plessis. “Just by seeing what has been blocked, the new reports we are able to generate, and the fact that we now have visibility that allows us to trace a problem mail all the way through our system for the first time are significantly beneficial for us.”
John Mc Loughlin, Managing Director at J2 Software, believes the key value for Afrimat has been the new-found visibility and reporting. “We identified this need early in the engagement, and in line with our focus on partnerships rather than box-dropping, we implemented solutions that would deliver immediate results,” he says.
Mc Loughlin notes that the IT environment has changed dramatically in recent years, and that customers today need a great deal more than just product: “You can buy just about any solution you want online nowadays, but knowing which one is appropriate, implementing and integrating it, and then managing the solution, can prove challenging. Most organisations have IT and information security resource limitations, so it’s important for them to have access to skilled IT security partners who can connect the dots for them and proactively maintain their security posture.”
“For Afrimat, the engagement with J2 is not just a client-service provider arrangement – it’s a true business partnership. We are able to call on them at all hours in the event of a problem, and we believe J2 has our interests at heart when proactively recommending new solutions to mitigate emerging threats,” says du Plessis.

Chelsea to welcome back Eden Hazard, unveil new reinforcements

In football, they say winning is a habit and Chelsea will be aiming to stay firmly in the groove when they travel to Leicester this weekend. Two consecutive victories prior to the international break has not only steadied the ship but also raised expectations following a difficult summer and a dreadful start to the campaign.
After an abject opening 45 minutes against Burnley that precipitated a 3-2 defeat and two red cards, many corners of the press suggested that this was a club in crisis. With some feeling that history was repeating itself from Chelsea's previous dismal title defence, the vultures were gathering. Those subsequent wins over Tottenham and Everton were therefore both timely and significant, earning valuable points and restoring belief. Talk of crisis has totally disappeared.
Antonio Conte will be eager to carry this momentum into the match at the King Power Stadium against a Leicester side that themselves appear to be playing with renewed confidence. They ripped Arsenal's defence apart at will on the opening weekend only to eventually lose 4-3 and they provided stubborn resistance at Old Trafford before falling 2-0 to Manchester United. Jamie Vardy is back to his marauding, dynamic best and with Riyad Mahrez still at the club they have genuine artistry in their creative ranks.
But Conte will be much more concerned with his own team and maintaining the upward trajectory that they have assumed since the whistle blew for half-time on the opening day of the season. He is aided by the availability of three new players in his squad though it is far from certain whether any of them will be selected from the start.
Danny Drinkwater will no doubt be the keenest of the three to take part having just made a £35 million switch to the reigning champions from their predecessors. Having not featured for club or country this season due to a niggling groin problem, a place in the starting XI is unlikely even though he has been in full training for the past week.
Davide Zappacosta has a better chance of being thrown into the fray after featuring as a second-half substitute for Italy and contributing to their 1-0 win over Israel. A more natural defender than Victor Moses, Conte might be tempted into giving his compatriot his full debut this weekend given Leicester's strength in wide areas. Mahrez, Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray all have excellent delivery ability and shutting down that area of service into the strikers will be a key aspect of the game as Arsenal harshly found out.
The third fresh player that Conte can call upon is not an expensive new signing but might feel like one given the way transfer fees have exploded in the last couple of months. Eden Hazard is fit and available for selection again having recovered from a broken ankle sustained on international duty in June. In a way, his absence has been a blessing, keeping him out of the clutches of the big-spending European teams, not least Barcelona who had £200m burning a hole in their pocket following the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain. Now, though, Chelsea's talisman is back and still in royal blue. The chances are Hazard will still only be named among the substitutes on Saturday but there is every likelihood that the away supporters will get to see the little magician in action at some point during the match.
With Gary Cahill serving the final match of this three-game ban, the centre-back trio of David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta will remain in place. Once again, however, Conte has a decision to make in midfield. Cesc Fabregas shone in the 2-0 victory over Everton though the freedoms he enjoyed that afternoon will not be replicated at the King Power. Fabregas will have to convince Conte that his work off the ball is up to scratch if he is to convince the manager not to give a debut to the more defensively-minded Drinkwater.
Further forward, one of the more intriguing matchups of this game will see Alvaro Morata come up against a pair of classic muscular English centre-backs. Still adjusting to the physicality and close proximity offered by Premier League defenders, the forthcoming battle with Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire will provide the next thorough examination of the £58m signing. Morata has made a decent if unspectacular start to his Chelsea career but has still bagged two goals and two assists in his three league appearances. Another addition to either column will only further help his acclimatisation while a victory for Chelsea will rubber-stamp their credentials ahead of Arsenal's visit the following weekend.

4-2-3-1 Leicester City Predicted Lineup To Spoil Chelsea’s Party

Leicester City went into the international break with a hard loss against Manchester United as the Foxes went down 2-0 to the Red Devils after a good fight. Manager Craig Shakespeare will hope his side take the positives from the game and focus on their strength in the next game against Chelsea.
Another huge boost would be the end of the transfer window that was a chip on the manager’s shoulder with numerous uncertainties in the dressing room. The Foxes had to let Danny Drinkwater move to Chelsea and somehow held on to Riyad Mahrez after huge speculations concerning the Algerian on the last day of the transfer window.

Chelsea Name Want-Away Striker In their Champions League Squad? The Right Move By Conte?

Chelsea started their season not in the best possible way, having faced an early defeat against Burnley in their very first game of the Premier League. However, the reigning champions have clawed their way back in, in the last two matches in the tournament and have been clinical in their display to notch up back to back victories against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in successive matches.
The Blues have brought in a new striker in the form of Alvaro Morata this summer, who has been looking good since his arrival at Stamford Bridge and has already notched up two goals to show for his efforts. However, the defending Premier League champions are looking for another player in order to spearhead their attack, which might be their rebellious marksman and Morata’s compatriot Diego Costa.
